Herbs appear to be a safer long term alternative to antidepressant drugs. A combination of antidepressant herbs and nervine tonics will be the most effective approach.
St John's Wort appears to work in part by inhibiting enzyme MAO that breaks down the neurotransmitters, thus allowing the neurotransmitters to circulate for longer....it can be used in place of a number of antidepressant drugs, including the tricyclic antidepressants. (Weaning from pharmaceuticals should be done under a physician's guidance.)
A 2008 review of 29 international studies suggested that St. John’s wort may be better than a placebo and as effective as different standard prescription antidepressants for major depression of mild to moderate severity. St. John’s wort also appeared to have fewer side effects than standard antidepressants. The studies conducted in German-speaking countries—where St. John’s wort has a long history of use by medical professionals—reported more positive results than those done in other countries, including the United States.

Recently I was researching the medication Cymbalta (duloxetine) which is prescribed for depression and nerve pain. Interestingly, St. John's Wort is also indicated for these same conditions. (St. John's Wort can also be applied topically in the form of an oil for nerve pain)
St. John's Wort is oftentimes prescribed during menopause when estrogen is low and osteoarthritis and depression become common side effects.
St. John's Wort should be looked upon like any antidepressant pharmaceutical - being careful of what other medications to combine with it, especially antidepressants.
It should also be noted, that like medications, it might take 2-4 weeks to see full results. If you are starting this herb or wanting to switch from a medication, allow it to take some time. Photosynthesis, or sensitivity to sunlight, can be a common side effect to this herb.
